Different Kinds of fireplace decor through the years

Fireplaces have been used for heating homes since ancient times. Initially situated in the center of the room, fireplaces were later moved to an outside wall.

For a long time, no significant changes was brought to the construction of the fireplace. Milestones in the evolution of the fireplace include Abraham Darbys innovations in the 17th century, Benjamin Franklin’s contributions in the 18th century and David Rittenhouse’s modifications of Franklin’s model later during the same century.

The fuel has also changed along with the form and technical characteristics. Originally used for burning wood, fireplaces later used coal for producing heat. Nowadays, electricity and natural gas are gaining popularity, due to their low cost and increased convenience.

Classic Fireplaces

A few traditional models of fireplaces have endured through time. Such are the French-style fireplaces, owing their curved design and ornate carvings to the tastes of King Louis XV. Floral representations typically adorn the mantels of these fireplaces.

Brick fireplaces are another option, adding an air of grave beauty to the room, taking you back to times long past.

Kiva fireplaces are often seen in homes built on a southwestern pattern. The access to the fire and the flue is usually possible through two separate openings.

English fireplaces are very popular nowadays; simple, yet effective, these fireplaces are often made of stone, which makes them look unaffectedly majestic.

Victorian fireplaces, on the other hand, have a lot of complex decorations embellishing their mantels. Cast iron is the most common material for them, but stone and wood can be used as well.

Contemporary Fireplaces

But perhaps you are looking for a breath of modernity for your home, rather than classic beauty. In this case, a contemporary fireplace is a better choice for you. There are new designs being developed all the time — some closer to the classic styles, others bold, transposing you into the future rather than the past.

Wherever you decide to install your fireplace, designers can come up with a model blending so well with its environment, that no one will be able to tell it was only added to the construction later.

Electrical fireplaces come with a new feature: portability; they can be installed anywhere and moved to another location whenever you feel like redecorating.

Choice is widely available. Whatever model of fireplace you have in mind, you can either find it in a store or have it made specially for your home.
